Reproduction of Dugesia tigrina under short-day and long-day conditions at different temperatures. I. Sexually derived individuals.

چکیده
Five successive generations of asexually derived populations of D. tigrina and their sexually derived parental population were reared under each of six combinations of 20, 23 and 26 °C with 12 and 16 h of daylight. Asexual and sexual reproduction were recorded for each population. Peaks of asexual reproduction occurred increasingly earlier in consecutive generations to finally disappear or occur later again. Peaks of sexual reproduction likewise occurred increasingly earlier in consecutive generations to be retarded again or disappear in later generations. Retardation occurs in earlier generations under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions. All generations later than the third, asexually derived, were sterile. The implications of these results are discussed and it is suggested that the time of cocoon deposition of all asexually derived offsprings is determined regardless of intervening generations during early development of the sexually derived parent. Attention is drawn to the similarity between the suggested mechanism and environmental control of aphid reproduction.

Tolerance of the planarian Dugesia tigrina (Tricladida: Turbellaria) to pesticides and insect growth regulators in a small-scale field study.
Two insect growth regulators, methoprene and a benzyl-1,3,benzodioxole (J-2931), had no detrimental effects on Dugesia tigrina under field conditions. Three other compounds, resmethrin, temephos, and cyromazine, had only minimal effects. Asexual multiplication among these planarian predators exceeded 68% when combined with Culex quinquefasciatus larvae and methoprene at different concentration ...
متن کاملTemperature and water conditions mediate the effects of day length on the breeding cycle of a Sahelian rodent, Arvicanthis niloticus.
Laboratory studies of variations in testicular activity (testicular weight and plasma testosterone concentration) were carried out on two populations of Arvicanthis niloticus, a Sahelian rodent that displays the particularity of being able to breed in the dry season. The animals were captured during phases of sexual activity or inactivity and were maintained in the laboratory for 50 days under ...
متن کاملResistance of two planarian species to UV-irradiation.
The aim of this work was to determine the effects of 20, 25 and 30 minute UV-irradiation periods lambda = 253.5 nm to two planarian species Dugesia tigrina (Gir.) and Polycelis felina (Daly.). In vivo, UV light effects have been reported to affect intracellular receptors and disrupt simple behaviour. The effects of UV-rays on mortality and behavior as well as morphological, cytological and hist...
متن کاملStimulation of germ cell proliferation in the planarian Dugesia tigrina (Girard).
Sexual strains of Dugesia tigrina display a seasonal development of sex organs in late summer or autumn and lay cocoons in the suceeding spring. This is followed by a period of asexual reproduction in mid-summer. Such a seasonal alternation of reproductive pathways makes this flatworm an ideal subject of inquiry into the inductive mechanisms controlling reproduction and its ultimate coupling to...
متن کاملFine-scale differences in diel activity among nocturnal freshwater planarias (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida)
BACKGROUND Although most freshwater planarias are well known photonegative organisms, their diel rhythms have never been quantified. Differences in daily activity rhythms may be particularly important for temperate-climate, freshwater planarias, which tend to overlap considerably in spatial distribution and trophic requirements. METHODS Activity of stress-free, individually tested young adult...
